Bio

Hello, My name is Somaia M. ElSayed, from Egypt. Starting September 2021, I act as a lecturer in quantitative methods in the department of sociology, the University of Essex- where I pursued my Ph.D degree in Government in 2021. My research focuses on political behaviour and contentious politics. In particular, I study how individuals make decisions to cooperate in contentious settings. Thus, my work lies in the borderline between politics and microeconomics. I use quantitative methods, machine learning techniques and can work with  observational data; and design my lab or survey experiments to generate data. Although I teach quantitative methods in SPSS, STATA and R, my preferred software is always R.
I acted as the head of Scientific Research and Programs Unit in the Institute of Governance and Sustainable Development, at Egypt's Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, for two successive years between (2020-2022). I also served as a member of the consultative committee for the United Nations Development Program's Arab Human Development Report 2016 and contributed to the statistical and quantitative analysis of the League of Arab States' regional report on International Migration and Development Report 2014.
